Not Looking Back on Sin

Genesis19:26
“But Lot’s wife looked back as she was following behind him, and she was turned into a pillar of salt.”

This one verse is SO important for us to remember in our everyday lives. God calls us to look forward to the future with Him, not for us to look back on a life full of sin.

The only things we get by looking back are pain and misery, Looking back to the life that was not honoring to God is not what we are called to do.

We are to focus on Him, on our eternity, not the temporary sin that we’ve grown accustomed to in this world.

My Story:

Much like Lot’s wife, I could have turned out to be salty about all that’s happened this year (sorry not sorry for the pun). But honestly? I’m not. And I refuse to be.

Now I will admit that there is still the tiniest bit of resentment in my heart whenever the topic of my ex is brought up, but each time it’s a little less. It’s dissipating with time, and I think that’s all we can do sometimes; let time and God do the healing.

One thing I’m not doing is looking back on a life that was not honoring to God with longing. I don’t at all miss the parts of my life that were not God centered.

Instead, I’m looking forward, toward the blessings God is bringing to me, to eternity with Him, to alignment with His plan for my life.

Exercise:

Today, I encourage you to think about all the ways that you may be looking back on your own life. All the ways that you may be longing for things that ultimately don’t serve you. Forgive yourself for that longing inside for a life that is past and then ask God for forgiveness for any of your ways in the past that were not honoring to Him.

And then, and this is the hard part, let it go. Release those thoughts that don’t serve you for eternity. Don’t let the guilt overtake you, but acknowledge where you went wrong, commit to doing better and then move forward with your life.

Easier said than done, I know. But I believe you can do it. Not through your own strength, but through God’s.

Today’s Takeaway:

Let go of the past. It no longer serves you. Look towards all the blessings in this life and the next that God is bringing you.

A Prayer For You

Dear God, thank you for the future eternity that I have with You. Help me to keep my mind focused on that future and not on the sins and mistakes of the past. Help me to yearn to be more like You everyday and show Your love and kindness to the world daily. I pray all this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
